Ms. Allan of the Department of Biomedical Sciences & Technology, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology was awarded a National Commission for Science, Technology & Innovation research grant. Ms. Allan’s research project entitled “Immunological Responses to Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine and Intestinal Nematodes Infestation in Children” is underway in one of the major slums in Nairobi County. This project is aimed at raising awareness that pneumonia is among the leading killer disease in children under five years of age in Kenya.

Mr. Situma of the Department of Chemical Sciences and Technology, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology was awarded a National Commission for Science, Technology Innovation research grant. Mr. Situma will be carrying out a project entitled "Design, Fabrication and Application of Carbonized Nanocomposites from Nanofibers/Carbon Nanotubes’’. Composites are defined as materials that consist of two or more chemically and physically different phases separated by obstruct interphase, in most cases an Inorganic particle, combines with an Organic matrix to form an Inorganic/organic composite. The Nanocomposites are generated by mixing Nano particles with different properties to create composite with a high quality and more functions than the individual particles used.

Mr. Odhek of the Department of Chemical Sciences and Technology, Faculty of Applied Science and Technology was awarded a National Commission for Science, Technology Innovation research grant. Mr. Odhek will be carrying out a project entitled ‘’Topdown Synthesis of Waste Eggshells Nanocatalyst for Biodiesel Production’’ the research focuses on the preparation of biodiesel from Yellow Oleander (Thevetia peruviana) seeds using Incinerated waste eggshells is to be used as a catalyst. The physical chemical properties of the oil and the biodiesel, Kinetic, thermodynamic and calorific values and the spectroscopic properties of the oil, biodiesel and the catalyst will be looked into. The biodiesel will also be tested in a four stroke engine. This will be done to verify it conforms to the International Standard of Testing and Material

Mr. Karani of the Department of Design and Media, Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology was awarded a National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation research grant. Mr. Karani’s will be carrying out a research thesis entitled “Universal Design Application and Its Effect on Urban Public Transport Systems in Nairobi-Kenya”.In Nairobi City CBD, efforts at improving accessibility are visible but they seem more of after-thoughts rather than beforehand and purposeful. The general objective of this study is to explore universal design application and its effect on urban public transport systems in Nairobi-Kenya; with particular emphasis on people with disabilities and public service vehicles, especially buses.

Mr. Odhong of the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Sciences and Technology was awarded a National Commission for Science, Technology Innovation research grant. Mr. Odhong’s will be carrying out a project entitled “Recovering Mechanical Strengths of Fractured Rice Husks Fibre Reinforced Polypropylene Composites by Injection Repair Using Healing Agents”. The projects aims at developing novel techniques for repair of rice husk fibre reinforced polypropylene composites for structural reuse.
